Necessity of iron for animals
Metals like iron, manganese, copper and zinc are known as essential trace metals that play important roles in the growth, health and metabolism of animals. Iron also plays a role in the production of antibiotics in the body. This element is found in almost all types of food items, like green leafy foods and fodder like lucerne and berseem. Even meat diet is a very good source of this element.
What does iron do for animals' bodies? Most of the iron in cattle accumulates in two places. The first is hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. The second is myoglobin, which is a protein present in muscle cells and stores and distributes oxygen as per need. Iron also helps make vital proteins and enzymes that run the cells' power centers in the mitochondria.
Iron Deficiency in Cattle The body needs iron only in small quantities, but if it is deficient, it invites many diseases. Since iron has an important role in making blood, anemia means iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is certain in animals where there is excessive presence of ticks or calves surviving only on milk or suffering from diarrhea for a long time. Due to iron deficiency, milch animals like cows, buffalo, goat, sheep and camel start producing less milk and start showing lethargy, lack of appetite, poor growth, weight gain issues and dizziness.
